Cavities
As mentioned above, a solvent accessible surface can be defined by rolling a probe sphere around the molecule of interest. Occasionally, an area of non-zero acessible surface are is found inside the molecule. Such an area is termed a cavity.
The function of cavities is unknown, but it is thought that they may be necessary to allow protein motions for ligand binding, etc.
