An account of the discovery of NMR at Harvard in 1945 is presented. It
is based on an interview with one of the main participants, E M
Purcell, and focuses on his role in the discovery.  The account also
puts the discovery in the context of Purcell's previous experiences,
particularly his wartime work at the MIT Radiation Laboratory.
